DJ NEWBILL PA GATORADE 2AA PLAYER OF YEAR 2010

Newbill, a 6’4”, 195-pound guard from Strawberry Mansion (Pa.) High School, averaged 24.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game in 2009-10 while garnering Pennsylvania Class AA Player of the Year and first team-all state accolades.
“We are very excited about DJ,” said Williams, as reported by gomarquette.com. “Anyone that has followed our program knows the priority toughness and character are to us. DJ embodies those two qualities as well as anyone we have recruited.”
A second team all-state member as a junior, Newbill, who verbally committed to MU on Jan. 30, led Strawberry Mansion to the state title game for the second time in three years and was the leading scorer within the Philadelphia Public League.
A dynamic scorer, Newbill erupted for 64 points (a school record and the sixth highest total in public league history) on 23-30 shooting against Saul on Jan. 7.
Upon arriving on campus this summer, Newbill will have four years of eligibility with the Golden Eagles

Meet the first team
Here is a look at The Inquirer's 2009-10 all-Southeastern Pennsylvania boys' basketball first team:
C.J. Aiken, Plymouth Whitemarsh. In leading the Colonials to a 30-2 record and their first Class AAAA state championship since 1997, the St. Joseph's recruit averaged 16.9 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.5 blocked shots. Aiken produced 19 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in the state final versus Penn Wood. With 1,302 career points, he is the program's fifth all-time leading scorer.
Aaron Brown, Penn Wood. Arguably the area's most improved player, Brown, an athletic and high-leaping swingman, averaged 19.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals for the Del-Val League and District 1 champions. He shot 58 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc. Scholarship offers, with more to follow, have come from Drexel, Rice, St. Joseph's and Temple.
Tony Chennault, Neumann-Goretti. The Inquirer's all-Southeastern Pennsylvania player of the year, bound for Wake Forest, averaged 19.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.6 steals for the Class AAA state titlists. Chennault, a four-year starter, totaled 1,621 career points. In what was a first for the program, he was selected as Gatorade's Pennsylvania player of the year.
Tyrone Garland, Bartram. With unlimited range and a knack for scoring in transition, Garland compiled a school-record 2,198 career points. This season, while sparking the Braves to a 19-10 record and a berth in the Class AAAA state tournament, Garland, who has committed to Virginia Tech, averaged 23.7 points in 29 games. He poured in a season-high 43 points in a Public League Division A win against Overbrook.
Devonte' "D.J." Newbill, Strawberry Mansion. Ringing up a Public League-best 24.2 points per game, the savvy wing guard led the Knights to their second Class AA state-final appearance in three seasons. Key for Mansion in the playoffs was Newbill's willingness to sacrifice some of his scoring, look for the hot teammate, and help out with the dirty work. The Marquette recruit posted 1,135 career points.
