Saints' Chennault named top hoopster
By the Inquirer Staff
Neumann-Goretti's Tony Chennault was named the Gatorade Pennsylvania boys' basketball player of the year yesterday.
The award, according to the selection committee, "recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement, and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court."
Chennault is now a finalist for the Gatorade national boys' player of the year award. The winner will be announced later this month.
The 6-foot-2 senior guard has led the 27-1 Saints to a national ranking by several publications, the No. 1 spot in The Inquirer's Top 10 for Southeastern Pennsylvania, and a berth in tonight's PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal against their arch rival, Archbishop Carroll.
Chennault is averaging 19.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
Tony was also the Reebok 2009 All-American High School All-Star game MVP
"I've been working with Coach Tone since May 2009. He has helped me improve my vertical tremendously. Before working with Coach Tone, I could barely dunk, I'm able to dunk off one foot and with both hands. He has helped me to increase my linear, lateral quickness and speed. Because of his strength training program and core work, I'm able to go to the basket hard and finish strong. I credit his training that has enable to be MVP of the Reebok's High School All-Star game. I will continue to work with Coach Tone to prepare myself for this upcoming year at Wake Forest University.
